Amy Liptrot on Orkney. Rebecca Marr for the Observer Last year saw a flurry of books generated by the edge lands of Britain. Into this vibrant arena storms Amy Liptrot and her debut The Outrun, an uncompromising account of addiction and recovery played out against the blasted fields of Orkney. The early chapters make for uncomfortable reading. Whether this is because of a desire to protect the identity of friends and lovers, or because of a level of self-absorption that will be familiar to anyone who has loved an alcoholic, is hard to discern. But even in this low state Liptrot affords flashes of awareness of a world beyond the bottle. She returns to Orkney. And here the writing begins to shift, suddenly, as through rusted gears. It is a slow-growing engagement. Language is gritty and malleable in her hands.

I have a girl crush on comedian and writer Amy Dresner. I spoke to Amy about her writing and newest projects, becoming an advice column editor, as well as how putting the dirty details of her sex and drug addition on the Internet affects her dating life. How did you first get into writing and comedy? My dad is a professional screenwriter and a published novelist so writing was always encouraged. I wrote professionally for some magazines in college and then got into others stuff. But even during all those rough years, I was still writing.
I just never did anything with it. I got back into writing professionally a few years ago, freelancing for The Fix and some other magazines. I got into stand-up about six or seven years ago. I was sharing in step meetings and people were just dying laughing. Some professional comics came up to me after and suggested I try my hand at stand-up so I did.
I performed for about 5 years, played at the Improv, Comedy Store, gotten written up in LA Weekly, toured nationally and then stopped during my divorce to concentrate on recovery and my writing.

The below is a list of some of the themes and commonalities observed. American men on the other hand, tend to be goal oriented, with the aim of getting laid. European men are comfortable with women, which leads to respect for women. They grow up developing friendships with the opposite sex and in turn, develop more empathy and understanding of the opposite sex. In American culture, there is a clear segregation of the sexes, boys play with boys and do boy things and girls do the same.
Then these boys grow up and are exposed to the opposite sex in an abrupt, often sexualized way. The consequence of this is a lack of understanding of women, a lack of comfort and often, a lack of respect. European men are raised to have great manners. This is definitely seen in how they treat not only women, but everyone around them.
There is a courtesy, consideration, chivalry and thoughtfulness in how they act, behave and engage with others. They are also raised with strong family and community values, so there is a sense of responsibility and accountability for others, not just for the self. This breeds a generation of men who have habits of looking after their own needs versus the needs of the collective.

Tweet Joe Newton I married my high-school sweetheart at 17, had a baby, together a few years, mental illness and subsequent infidelity led to things ending. My ex-husband remarried, divorced again, and is now in another LTR. I’m in a LTR for a decade with my current partner CP , we have a few kids, and I’m so in love with him, it terrifies me. My ex frequently makes sexual remarks to me, low-key flirts.
I feel an animal attraction in the moment. I don’t want to be with him, my relationship with CP is solid AF, and I get amazing fucking at home from a man far more skilled. CP knows about ex-husband’s remarks and one actual physical advance. CP has offered to talk to my ex. I told him nah, I’ll deal with it and make it stop. I talked to my ex-husband today, and he said: So humor me because you know we both enjoy it.
