The Reports Last year we had the wettest April for a hundred years but a dry day for the Spring Meeting: Again good numbers attended and we were well accommodated in Ravenshead Village Hall. He also thanked Dorothy Johnston who was standing down from Council this year as she prepares to move to Oxford. Dorothy has been of great assistance to many members undertaking research in her role as the Keeper of Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham. We were very pleased to elect a new Vice-Chairman, the eminent historian and polymath, and local boy, Sir Neil Cossons. Further volumes were in varying stages of completion and we look forward to those. Joyce and Frank Dodd, 97 and 96 respectively, who had been devoted to each other for 77 years clasped hands one last time at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, Kent, before both passing away. The couple, from Gravesend in Kent, fell in love when they were teenagers and were married for nearly eight decades. They had five children, 12 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Both ill, the couple lay in separate wards in hospital, but staff decided to move their beds side by side so they could be together at their last moments. The couple’s daughter Angela Bonell, 75, said: SWNS Mr Dodd, who had heart failure, had spent five weeks in a care home before going into hospital and his devoted wife visited him every day until she became ill too.
The couple died on Saturday, April 8, Mr Dodd at 4am and his wife at 6pm – just days after their wedding anniversary. The pair had met when they were just 14 in Dartford, Kent when Joyce was a waitress and Mr Dodd worked as a sawyer at a timber yard. After they retired, Mr Dodd continued to enjoy gardening and refused to let age slow him down.
His daughter recalled finding her dad up a ladder, painting a drain pipe, at the age of Mrs Dodd, who loved baking, always had homemade cake for visitors and never went to a party without a quiche, her children said. The pair will be laid to rest at Gravesend Crematorium on May

Sophia Huda Photo Credit: Dog owners who love city breaks are sure to love this place. We found some fantastic hotels and luxury apartment rentals that welcome dogs and their owners with open arms. In the case of the latter, we were reliably told that The Old Town Chambers luxury apartments, set in a medieval close off the world-famous Royal Mile, actively encourage guests to bring their dogs along and even provide essentials, such as dog beds and treats.
The city has a tonne of pubs who welcome well-behaved guests however many legs they have. But pubs aren’t the only places where dogs are allowed – hair salons and clothes shops including White Stuff and Anthropologie, for example , as well as a selection of art centres also welcome dogs. Inverleith Park near the Royal Botanic Gardens is noted for its peaceful atmosphere, and nearby Cammo Estate gets the seal the of approvals from local dog owners.
The one we find most intriguing is Clifton County Park which has acres, so it’s recommended you download a map before visiting. In the city, we like Albert Schloss however small dogs are only welcome before 7pm so no late nights. Packed full of history and rivers, the Norfolk Broads make a great getaway for dog owners looking for a river or coastal town short break. East Ruston, a village near Norwich has some great dog friendly holiday cottages, Astrid Want tells us.
After a recent visit with her Pug, Ming Ming, Hollyoaks actress Sarah Jayne Dunn told us it’s a place she thinks people should definitely visit. This Medieval village is incredibly pretty and well preserved with Tudor buildings all around. It’s also home to one of the most dog friendly pubs we’ve visited.

The Domesday Book compiled in has the settlement recorded as Mammesfeld whereas in later market-petition documents of the spelling had changed to Maunnesfeld. Insect and Arachnid news and sightings from around Nottinghamshire The beetle Litargus balteatus recorded again from Sherwood Forest For many years, Litargus balteatus Le Conte, was only on the UK species list, on the basis of a number of specimens collected from Sherwood Forest in There have been several other records from different areas of the UK since, suggesting that it is finally on the increase. On October 19th , we found a single specimen on the underside of a cut log, near the site of the old Sherwood Forest visitor centre, making it the first Nottinghamshire record for well over a century.
This represents the third county and Nottinghamshire’s third ever record this year, all coming within the space of a few months. Rob suggests that the moth “may have arrived on the overnight south easterly winds from where it is more common, or possibly breeding in the area”. The latter perhaps seems the most likely and it probably becoming established within the city itself. Interestingly, all three of the county’s records, including singles from Bestwood Village on July 5th Tobin, S.
The two additions are historical records of Formicoxenus nitidulus and Lasius platythorax. Formicoxenus nitidulus Nylander, is believed to be a social parasite, making discreet nests within the large mounds produced by several Formica species. Known only from Wigsley Wood in the north-east of the county, it was recorded by Collingwood in and again in , where it was presumably found within the nests of Formica rufa. The other species is Lasius platythorax Seifert, , for which there is a single record from Langford Moor near Newark in , which was identified from a specimen retained in the Natural History Museum in Dublin Museum by Mike Lush in

Decided to call at cafe for a coffee which I know doesn’t allow dogs and mine is too young to tie up outside. No one came outside to serve – obviously not what they do. I went inside and asked if I could have a cappuccino and scone with butter and jam and cutlery.
